Description

This 22-acre Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection property in Coventry offers informal access to the river for fishing, walking and cross-country skiing. You can stop here while paddling down the river and rest in the shade of riverside trees.

Directions

On Route 44 in Coventry, drive a short distance west from the Willimantic River bridge and turn right (north) onto Brigham Tavern Road. Travel for eight-tenths mile on this winding riverside road until you see the meadow on the right and Brigham Tavern Road Extension on the left. In another three-tenths mile, there is a driveway to the right into an informal parking area in the meadow.

Trail Notes

Although this is an undeveloped area, there are informal fishing paths to the river and along the riverbank. If you are paddling downstream, the meadow is on the right bank just below the University of Connecticut wells (brick well houses). The closest upstream launch site is at Merrow Meadow Park in Mansfield. Check the Canoe and Kayak Map for details about the river’s hazards, features and launch sites. This is a quick-water section of the river, which is appropriate for experienced river paddlers.
